As with most high mileage, old 1340cc EVO engines, after leaving the bike sit for a couple of weeks, when you first start the engine it immediately clears the crankcase of the excess oil through either the air intake or breather if re-routed like most old HD's. Instead of a very smoky exhaust, you get an oil soaked engine. That usually results in oil over the back tyre within a mile or so. Often, as in my case, this problem proved to be an oil pump check valve failing. I was lucky that replacing the oil pump check valve spring & 3/8" ball in the old 1986 FLHT/C stopped the oil leaking past and filling the crank case over time. The bike can now be ridden safely and no more drifting on corners or hours spent cleaning oil from the back tyre. Another great plus is that you don't have mates laughing at the oil soaked engine. The old spring no doubt, had to have lost tension on the ball over time.
